When: 17th July 2009

Where: Bangalore - From home to office/college and back home

Who: You, me and every Bengaluru resident.

Gardens, shady roads, pure air, salubrious climate and not to forget its scientific establishments, are some of the ever green associations with the word “Bengaluru”.  These are few of the many reasons that attracted the foreign investors towards Bengaluru, which is now popularly known as the “Silicon Valley of India”. The exponential growth and surge in the floating population has brought its own problems like diminishing green cover, soaring temperatures,  traffic problems, havoc created by rain and all sorts of pollution in just a short span of time. Are we waiting for someone else to put an end to this? Isn’t it our responsibility to preserve the Garden city for our future generations? It is about time that we stop the blame game and be the change we want to see in the world.

Thinking? Read on...

1.    Bengaluru’s population is about 8 million.

2.    Bengaluru is considered to have the highest density of traffic in the world.

3.    Traffic population is doubling every 5 years.4.    Road space used by a person in a bus is 3% of a person in a car and 5% of a person in 2  wheeler.

5.    Air Quality Index (AQI) is between 150-300 in different areas of Bengaluru. AQI>100 is severe air pollution.

6.    Bengaluru has the highest number of 2-wheelers in the world.

7.    About 40 lakh ltrs of petrol and 80 lakh ltrs of diesel is consumed each day in Karnataka  alone

Aren’t these our concerns?

Yes. These are definitely our concerns. It's time for us to act and not wait for miracles to happen. Are you ready to step out of your sedentary lifestyle and make a difference? If so, then join hands with us and pledge to use one of the below ways to commute on the 17th of July 2009. It is simple, fun, healthy and “Green”. Let us go green by….

Walking:
We could skip those early morning walks and walk to office instead. We can take the calmer roads and enjoy the nice greenery they have to offer.

Cycling:
We burn calories at our gymnasiums to keep in shape. Why not use the same energy to reach office by cycling? Average commute time on the bicycle and motorbike should remain almost similar. Don’t have one? Borrow from a friend, rent from a shop or buy one.

Mass transport:
BMTC is one of the most profitable transport organizations in the nation and we could make better use of the mass transport facilities provided by them. It's both economical and eco-friendly. Find out the bus routes in advance by talking to your friends and colleagues

Car pooling:
Aren’t all the above options proposed to us time and again? Still we see SUVs, sedans and auto rickshaws clogging the roads. In most of the cases, the number of occupants is not more than one or two. Let us at least offer to pool with others who take the same route. It makes our pockets healthier too.

Seems cumbersome? A little bit of planning and thinking ahead could make it a lot easier. Try it for a day and realize how much fun and simple it is. Let's begin the journey towards a greener, cleaner Bengaluru. Let’s also inspire our friends to follow the greener way and help Bengaluru with its problems. Let’s do our bit for Mother Earth.

Go Green, Let it start from me!!
